Cruisers, sport bikes, trikes, and scooters
Motorcycle Insurance in Ohio & West Virginia
A motorcycle policy is not a car policy with two fewer wheels. Rates swing hard between carriers based on engine size, rider age, storage, and how you ride, and the coverages that matter most on a bike, agreed value, accessories, safety apparel, and uninsured motorist, are the ones most quotes quietly leave off. Because Policy Scout is independent, we run your bike through the whole carrier panel and show you what identical coverage costs everywhere.

AAA Independent Insurance Agent
Policy Scout is an appointed AAA Independent Insurance Agent, so we can quote AAA motorcycle and recreational coverage through CSAA Insurance Group right alongside the rest of our 50+ carrier network. AAA member discounts, multi-policy bundling, and claims support are available to Ohio and West Virginia households, no separate AAA agent visit needed.
Who this is for
- Seasonal riders who park the bike from November to March
- Touring and cruiser owners with saddlebags, pipes, and audio added
- Sport bike riders who keep getting quoted only by one company
- Trike, scooter, moped, and dual-sport owners
- Riders adding a bike to an existing Policy Scout auto or home policy
Coverage options, broken down
Typical coverage parts. Actual terms depend on the carrier and the policy form we place for you.
Bodily injury & property damage liability
Pays for injuries and damage you cause to other people, plus your legal defense if you are sued.
Uninsured & underinsured motorist
The most important coverage on a bike. Motorcycle injuries are severe and at-fault drivers routinely carry state-minimum limits that do not come close.
Collision
Repairs or replaces your bike after a crash or a low-speed drop, no matter who is at fault, minus your deductible.
Comprehensive
Theft, vandalism, fire, hail, and deer strikes, including damage while the bike is stored in the garage over winter.
Agreed value / actual cash value
Agreed value locks in a set payout on a total loss so a custom or vintage bike is not settled at depreciated book value.
Accessories & custom parts
Covers exhaust, chrome, bags, windscreens, audio, and paint above the small built-in limit most policies include.
Safety apparel coverage
Rebuys helmet, jacket, gloves, and boots after a covered accident, often with no deductible.
Medical payments
Immediate medical bills for you and your passenger, without waiting on a liability decision.
Roadside assistance & trip interruption
Flatbed towing to a shop that works on bikes, plus lodging and meals if you break down far from home.
What it does not cover
- Wear, mechanical breakdown, and routine maintenance
- Track days, racing, and timed competition events
- Rental or delivery use of the bike unless specifically endorsed
- Custom parts above your scheduled accessory limit
- Passenger liability on some bare-bones policies, always confirm guest passenger coverage
Limits & deductibles to know
- Ohio minimum: 25/50/25
- $25k per person, $50k per accident bodily injury, $25k property damage. Legal for a bike, but thin for any real injury claim.
- West Virginia minimum: 25/50/25 plus UM
- West Virginia also requires uninsured motorist coverage at those limits, which is exactly the coverage riders need most.
- Recommended: 100/300/100 with matching UM/UIM
- A serious motorcycle injury clears six figures quickly. Higher limits on a bike usually cost far less than the same jump on a car.
- Accessories: schedule the real number
- Add up pipes, bags, audio, seat, lighting, and paint. Most policies include only $1,000-$3,000 by default.
- Deductibles: $250-$1,000
- Comp and collision deductibles are set separately. A higher comp deductible saves little on a stored bike; a lower collision deductible is usually worth it.
How to buy it well
1. Insure the bike for what it would cost to replace
Decide between agreed value and actual cash value first. If the bike is customized, vintage, or you owe more than book value, agreed value is worth the small premium difference.
2. Raise uninsured motorist before anything else
Riders are far more likely to be badly injured by another driver than to cause the crash. UM/UIM is the coverage that actually pays your hospital bills, and it is cheap.
3. Add up your accessories honestly
Exhaust, bags, lighting, audio, and custom paint add thousands. Schedule the true total so a claim does not stop at the built-in limit.
4. Ask about layup credits
Ohio and West Virginia riders park for months. Several carriers reduce liability charges during storage while keeping comprehensive active for theft and fire.
5. Bundle and stack the rider credits
Multi-bike, multi-policy, and MSF course credits stack. Adding a bike to an existing auto policy often drops the auto premium too.
What drives your price
- Engine displacement and bike class, a 600cc sport bike rates very differently than a 1800cc touring bike
- Rider age, riding experience, and years licensed
- Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course completion
- Where the bike is garaged and whether it is stored indoors
- Annual mileage and whether you ride seasonally
- Driving record, including car violations
- Modifications and custom work
Discounts we look for
- MSF / rider safety course completion
- Multi-bike, insuring two or more motorcycles together
- Bundling the bike with auto, home, or renters
- Layup or storage credits for the winter months
- Mature rider, homeowner, and claims-free credits
- Association memberships (HOG, GWRRA, AMA) with several carriers
- Paid-in-full and paperless billing
Ohio & West Virginia notes
Ohio and West Virginia riding is seasonal and terrain-heavy, the Ohio River valley, Hocking Hills, and the Appalachian ridge roads draw riders from March through October, and both states see heavy deer activity in the fall that shows up as comprehensive claims. Ohio requires helmets for riders under 18 and for anyone in their first year licensed; West Virginia requires a helmet for every rider and passenger. Neither state lets a helmet law affect your claim payment, but rate territory, deer frequency, and winter storage all move your premium, and they move it differently at each carrier, which is exactly why we compare.
Common questions
How much is motorcycle insurance in Ohio or West Virginia?
Liability-only policies on a modest bike often run $10-$25 a month, while full coverage on a newer cruiser or sport bike typically lands between $40 and $120 a month. Engine size, rider age, and record move the number more than anything else.
Do I need motorcycle insurance year-round if I only ride in summer?
Yes, keep the policy in force. Cancelling creates a coverage lapse that raises your rate next season, and comprehensive is what protects a stored bike from theft and fire. Ask us about layup credits instead.
Does my auto policy cover my motorcycle?
No. Motorcycles need their own policy. Your auto policy's uninsured motorist coverage may apply in limited situations, but the bike itself, your gear, and your liability while riding all come from the motorcycle policy.
Is my passenger covered?
Guest passenger liability is included on most standard policies but excluded or limited on some low-cost ones. We confirm it in writing on every motorcycle quote we present.
Will a motorcycle safety course lower my rate?
Almost always. MSF course completion is one of the largest single credits on a motorcycle policy at most carriers, and it usually applies for several years.
Can I insure a trike, scooter, or moped?
Yes. Trikes, scooters, mopeds, and dual-sports all quote through the same panel, though the carriers that price them best differ from the ones that price sport bikes best.
