Ranger's quick take
- Losing employer coverage usually gives you 60 days to enroll in a Marketplace plan.
- COBRA keeps your exact plan but you pay the full premium, often a big jump.
- Lower income after a job loss may qualify you for premium tax credits.
- Ask HR for your coverage end date in writing so you can plan around it.
A layoff, a quit, or a hours cut that drops you below benefits eligibility all have one thing in common. Your employer health plan is about to end, and you have a limited time to replace it.
You do not have to wait for open enrollment. Losing job based coverage is a qualifying life event, which opens a Special Enrollment Period for a Marketplace plan.
COBRA: same plan, full price
COBRA lets you keep your former employer's plan for a period of time. Your doctors, deductible progress, and drug list stay the same. The catch is cost. You now pay the share your employer used to cover, plus a small admin fee, which can make the monthly bill several times higher than your paycheck deduction.
COBRA can make sense if you've already met most of your deductible this year or you're in the middle of treatment with a specific doctor.
Marketplace plan: new plan, possible tax credits
A Marketplace plan starts fresh with a new deductible, but premium tax credits are based on the income you expect for the rest of the year. If you're between jobs, that number may be lower than you think, and the savings can be large.
Timing so you don't have a gap
- Find your exact coverage end date. Some plans run through the end of the month.
- You can usually apply for a Marketplace plan up to 60 days before and 60 days after you lose coverage.
- If you enroll before the old plan ends, the new one can start the first of the next month.
- Keep your termination letter or benefits notice as proof of the life event.
What about my life insurance?
Group life insurance through work usually ends with the job too. If your family depends on your income, pricing an individual term life policy now locks in coverage that doesn't depend on your next employer.
Frequently asked questions
- How long do I have to get health insurance after losing my job in Ohio?
- Usually 60 days from the date your employer coverage ends to enroll in a Marketplace plan.
- Is COBRA or a Marketplace plan cheaper?
- It depends on your income and health needs. Many people pay less on a Marketplace plan with tax credits, but COBRA can win if you've already met your deductible.
- Can I switch from COBRA to a Marketplace plan later?
- Voluntarily dropping COBRA mid-year generally doesn't open a Special Enrollment Period, so compare both before you choose. You can switch during open enrollment.
